Detective Heartbreak
Detective Heartbreak is a gleefully daft parody that puts a hard-boiled gumshoe on the case of modern romance, tasked with cracking his most baffling mystery yet: why Connor got left on read after a seemingly successful(ish) date. Jake Thomson chews through noir clichés in great style as the eponymous Detective, while Tilly Mearns brings much of the show's off-kilter comic energy as lusciously-locked Victor. Pop culture references, occasional slapstick and more magician’s handkerchiefs than you might expect keep things rattling along at a cracking pace, and with barely a lull between laughs.
It's a quirky, original concept, and a great example of a well executed shoestring student production. If I'm being picky, the plot loses its grip a little towards the end and the conclusion feels somewhat unsatisfying - though that might just be me being too much of a romantic! On the whole though, this is a fun, lighthearted and silly look at the modern dating landscape, and well worth catching.
