Inspired by the legacy of Charles McPhee's syndicated Dream Doctor Radio Show, a nightly call-in programme that ran across US markets in the early 2000s, on which McPhee spent years interpreting listeners' dreams live on air, the amusingly named REM Doula and his team of REMniacs channel the same spirit, mixing sketches, songs and game-show parody with a quirky, surreal sense of humour to unpack the logic behind our dreams.
The cast bring a warm enthusiasm and offbeat energy to the material, ensuring that darker subjects like nightmares and sleep paralysis are dealt with sensitively, but without losing the overall sense of humour. One particularly fun section was "Whose Dream Is It Anyway?", in which the cast improvise and perform scenes based on dreams volunteered by the audience.
It's a hard tone to strike, a unique blend of educational and entertaining, but the show pulls it off, sending you out with real tools for interpreting your own dreams and a smile on your face.
